The King’s Daughters
By Shirley Mitchell
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.”
1 John 3:1
When I was a little girl, my parents treated me like I was a princess. My father esteemed his daughters. He would spin us around in the back yard after he finished his work day. My mother taught us grace and how to be an elegant lady. They showered us with hugs and kisses. So I truly thought I was a princess. I was a vibrant child full of confidence and giggles.
Then, I reached the beginning of the awkward years, somewhere around 9 or 10 years of age. It was the age when the boys began to separate from the girls. I was shocked when the boys at school hurled insults at me. I thought how could they not see who I was? How could they talk to me that way? I was a princess. Didn’t they know who I was? Didn’t they know me? Since they didn’t know who I was, I began to doubt who I was.
Since the world didn’t know who I was, the world could not affirm my identity. Since I looked to the world for affirmation instead of God, I let the world strip away the knowledge of who I truly I am. I know now that I am a daughter of the Sovereign God of the universe. If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, then you are a daughter of the Most High King. You and I are made in His image. We are made to be part of His family and to share in His glorious riches. We are dearly loved by our Father who has lavished His love upon us. He calls us His child. We are His Beloved daughters. It is a natural human tendency to be drawn to someone who loves and esteems us this much. The world may not know who we are, but we know who we are.
If you and I ever start to tell ourselves some lie from the kingdom of darkness like “you are ugly”, “you are an idiot”, “you are incapable of doing anything for the kingdom”, or “no one could ever love you”, then we stop ourselves. The daughter of the Most High King is not any of those lies. We stop agreeing with the enemy of our souls. We draw our strength from what God’s Word says about us. We are the lavished upon daughters of the Supreme Ruler of the Universe.
"Pray with me: Oh, dear heavenly LORD, Father. How it stretches my mind to grasp that You love me so greatly. You, Father, lavished Your love upon us. You call us Your children! Help us to recognize when the world is seeking to strip us of the knowledge of our true identities. The world can’t know us because the world did not fully know Your Son, Jesus. It is in the name of Jesus, the name above all names, that I pray, Amen.
