The Creativity of God
By Shirley Mitchell
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.” Isaiah 40:28a
As I was praying and asking for a simple example to explain that we can never put God’s creative display of His power in a box, He reminded me of a conversation that I had with my sister Linda. She asked me, “Shirley, your daughter Sophia is such a unique child who marches to the beat of her own drum. Did you do anything to spur such creativity and personality?” Without hesitation I replied, “Oh, no, it is all from God.” Sophia’s inventions are all over our house. They are made out of any material she can get her hands on; tape, rope, and construction paper are her favorites. She would rather play with her self-constructed island of palm trees than her 12 Dancing Princesses’ Genevieve doll. From the Barbie packaging box, she made a TV set using the plastic as the screen. She pretends that she is on TV giving the evening weather forecast. What I mistake as garbage, she sees as an opportunity to launch into a new imaginary play land. She serves as my daily reminder of God’s own creativity. I should never limit what His very creative mind can do to fulfill His plan on earth and what He has waiting for me in heaven. Don’t you limit Him, either.
Since God is the Almighty Creator, He is still all powerful and in complete control. The Lord our God did not create the universe and then hide in heaven because His created world raged out of His control. He still reigns over all creation.
Our Creative God goes beyond our wildest imagination. Sometimes, He thrills us by taking us a step into the beyond. His creativity has no bounds. He can make something beautiful from nothing. He knows how to use what we call garbage to bring something fun and valuable. No matter if you and I have walked with God for a little while or a long time, He still is mysterious and intriguing. The more we know Him, the more we realize that we have only started to know Him because He is so much more than our limited minds can fathom. Since it is His very nature to be creative, He is looking for lives that are willing to release it. Beloved, may He release His creativity in your life and my life.
Pray with me: Oh, Lord, my Creator, be creative in my life. Make something from my broken pieces and empty places. Create in me a heart that is for You and like no other. Create in my life a testimony to Your great character. Unleash Your creativity through my willingness to let You have full control. It’s in the Name above all names and the Name that one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess, in Jesus’ Name, Yeshua’s Name, I pray. Amen.
